A busy summer…
Chiropractic First have been very busy indeed this summer. We have attended a record number of events in Brighton and Hove including: St Anne’s Wells Gardens Festival, Take Part, Brunswick Festival. We really enjoy these opportunities to meet patients and become part of the local community.
Toys 4 Adjustment
Chiropractic First proudly participated in Toys 4 Adjustment day. Organised by the United Chiropractic Association, Toys 4 Adjustment supports the Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal.
From 20th November until 18th December, patients of Chiropractic First were invited and encouraged to donate gifts for children, families, older people and the homeless. The gifts were then distributed to those in need across the nation.
On Wednesday 15th December, Mark offered a FREE ADJUSTMENT to all patients who brought a toy with them to donate to the appeal. All gifts were gratefully received by us, the Salvation Army and of course the children themselves.
BackCare Awareness Week October 2010
Between 11th-15th October, Chiropractic First will be working in conjunction with BackCare to help raise awareness of the role chiropractic can play in helping those with back pain, and to treat as many new patients as possible.
BackCare is a national charity that aims to reduce the impact of back pain on society by providing information, support, promoting good practice and funding research.
At Chiropractic First we are offering a FREE EXAMINATION AND SPINAL SCAN to all new patients booking into the clinic between 11th and 15th October.
The theme of BackCare Awareness Week 2010 is “Beyond the Box: Home, Work, Play”.
Most people ‘know’ how to pick up a box and we can all recite the ‘straight back and bend the knees’ mantra.
But what about the hidden lifts, bends and twists that aren’t box-shaped?
Most of us don’t think twice when lifting or moving everyday objects in and around our work places. What about the box files, the laptop and several cups of coffee, or reaching to the top shelf?
When we are safely back home, out of a specific Health and Safety environment, we automatically perform hidden lifts and movements without thinking about it. We lift or move the shopping bags, a pile of washing, a tray of food, a piece of furniture, the toy box or even the children! Then there are those garden chores that involve bending and lifting. It isn’t just lifting a heavy box we need to think about with regard to possible back injuries.
BackCare has produced two information packs to highlight some of the dangers and give advice on how to avoid back injuries in the two main areas of day-to-day living. These will be available to patients at Chiropractic First, to complement their chiropractic treatment.
Sunday 5th – Saturday
11th September 2010 is Migraine Awareness Week.
If you suffer from migraines, you’re certainly not alone. They’re relatively common, affecting an estimated 10% of the population. What can be done to get rid of migraines? According to a recent study, chiropractic care may hold the answer. Subjects receiving chiropractic adjustments reported substantial improvement in migraine frequency, duration, disability, and medication use following two months of treatment. One in five participants reported a 90% reduction in migraines, and half reported significant improvement in migraine severity (Reference: Tuchin PJ, Pollard H, Bonello R. A randomized controlled trial of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy for migraine. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Feb. 2000: Vol. 23, No. 2, pp91-95.) Please visit our website to see the full article from To Your Health Magazine.
Sunday 5th – Saturday 11th September 2010 is Migraine Awareness Week.
The aim of this is to “raise awareness of this much-misunderstood condition and encourage those affected to seek information and advice to help manage their migraine” (Migraine Action)
Each year Migraine Action focuses on a particular theme during the week, along with discussing migraine generally.
In 2009 the theme was migraine in children and young people and during the week Migraine Action launched its ‘Young Migraineurs Campaign’. For more information on the campaign visit their website. The theme for Migraine Awareness Week 2010 is ‘Migraine in the workplace’. Chiropractic First has supported Migraine Awareness Week since 2009 when Mark held a talk in the clinic on migraine and chiropractic. This year we are supporting the event by having literature available in the clinic, blogging (see our recent post on How to Defy the Daily Grind) and putting additional information on issues related to this year’s theme on our website.
Brunswick Festival in the Square, 21st-22nd August
This weekend, 21st-22nd August, the annual Brunswick Festival continues with the Brunswick Festival in the Square, and Chiropractic First will be there! Having enjoyed going to the festival for the past two years, Mark has decided to take the Chiropractic First Spinal Check to the festival – so both he and Lewis will be working it this year instead!

A range of live music is one of the key attractions of the festival - as well as our FREE Posture Check of course!
For the rest of us it promises to be a lazy weekend of live music, dance, street theatre, circus skills, healing area, arts crafts and bric-a-brac stalls, world food and beer tent… fun and entertainment for all the family!

We Took Part!
The Take Part International Festival of Sport, Preston Park, Brighton on Saturday 19th June

Over 12,000 people came to the TakePart Festival in Preston Park this year and Chiropractic First were there in the Health and Fitness Zone. The Take Part Festival began as one of the most successful Schools Sports Partnerships in the country. Set up in 2001, and led by Dorothy Stringer Sports College, the partnership established a schools sports festival in 2006 to develop a programme for children aged 5 to 16 throughout Brighton and Hove. This event has exceeded all expectations with over 11,000 children taking part in 2007.
Due to the festival’s phenomenal success and the opportunity that the London 2012 games offer in terms of public interest in sport, the Partnership, in collaboration with Brighton and Hove City Council and the local Primary Care Trust decided to expand the festival to include adults, with the intention of making a step change in participation levels for sports and physical activity in the city. Chiropractic First are proud to have also played a part in this incredible event.
The aim of the Festival is simple – to use the London 2012Olympics to encourage more people to get more active more often. Of course this complements our own aim at Chiropractic First in helping all our patients improve their well-being through optimising mobility and encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle.
31st May – Hove Lions Carnival, Hove Park
Chiropractic First has been involved in the annual Hove Lions Carnival for three years now. Mark and Lynn went down this year and despite a little drizzle, a good day was had by all. The clinic has been able to follow up with a number of people who came to see us at the Posture Check stall and we look forward to forming long and rewarding relationships with all our new patients.
Chiropractic First at St Anne’s Wells Gardens Spring Festival, 22nd May

This was a lovely, sunny family day out. Every year St Anne’s Wells Gardens on Somerville Road in Hove holds its Spring Festival which involves live music, children’s activities local stall holders and lots and lots of food!
This year’s attractions included a viewing tent where you could watch some of the earliest film ever produced in the studios that used to be situated in the Gardens, a climbing wall, a boxing and kick-boxing ring, the opportunity to meet a number of children’s TV characters and of course to buy organic, locally grown farm produce and herbs. There was a tranquil area in the Scented Garden where local masseurs were offering visitors a relaxing massage amidst the excitement. This was where the Chiropractic First Spinal Screening was situated.

We always appreciate the opportunity to meet new people and help them understand how chiropractic may be able to help them with their level of well-being. However, it’s not everyday you get the chance to give advice to a unicycling clown!
It was a great day out and we look forward to taking part in next year’s festival.
